Frederick Scanagatta Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Frederick Charles Scanagatta on April 12, 2024. He was born on May 31, 1938, in Santa Rosa, California to the late Charles Scanagatta and Ann Belli. A Santa Rosa native, Freddie was an original Italian “West Ender.” He was 3rd generation Italian whose family migrated from Massa-Carrara, Italy. Like many Italians who laid roots on West End 6th Street, he started his career in the grocery business at age 15 and worked for over 50 years, ending his career as a Produce Manager and proud UFCW union man! Fred graduated from Santa Rosa High School Class of ’56. He married his first wife in 1960 and they welcomed two children. In 1961, he proudly served as a Submariner in the US Navy. In 1973, he married the love of his life Yvonné Scanagatta and welcomed three more children into his life. They were happily married for 48 years at the time of her passing, but his heart was forever hers. His love so deep, it fueled him to become a full-time caregiver, nurse, and dedicated husband. His soft-spoken words of love and encouragement, proved to be a bridge for Yvonné from this world to the next. A notable and significantly important testament to Fred’s character was his unrelenting dedication to his Penngrove Heights community. For almost 50 years, he volunteered his time as the steward of College Park Mutual Water Co. Many knew him as the man that you’d call when there was an issue with your water. Whether it was the water bill or the water itself, he was always willing to help (any time of day or night). His heart was as generous with his time as he was with the stories, anecdotes, and phrases he told and the advice he gave! As many turn their water on today, it was Fred that worked tirelessly behind the scenes that made sure it was clean and drinkable for his beloved community! He touched so many lives ~ we are unsure he really knew how many indeed. “Freddie the Fox”, was a man of strength, courage, and an encyclopedia of knowledge! His absence will be missed at the dinner table, where you would find him for hours, as he solved the world’s problems and debated politics rather than eat his meal! Should you have the privilege of a lecture, you would have to allow hours of time, which resulted in (often unsolicited) guidance, love, and stories of historical accuracy. He was passionate about history and debate, recognizing that history often repeated itself if a deep appreciation of the world was not shared with generations to come. In return, he was loved deeply by those who were touched by his words, strength, and intellect. Freddie’s Italian roots gave him a love of stonework which was evident as he spent years building rock walls on his property. In his spare time, you would find Fred, the master builder, proudly working, building not just a house, but rather a loving home for his family. Above all, his proudest accomplishment was being a husband, father, and grandfather. In the end, love was his legacy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yvonné Scanagatta, his parents, Charles and Ann Scanagatta. He is survived by his children Roman (Eleni) Scanagatta, April (Jeff) Robinson, Leslie (Mel) Scanagatta, John (Deanna) Scanagatta, Kenya (Stephen) Van Leuven; his grandchildren Shelby, Stephanie, Trevor, Mollie, Marina, Valentina, Jessica, Danielle, and Wyatt; his sister Diane Goncalves and brother Daryl Scanagatta, nieces, and treasured sister-in-law, Deborah Vick May of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Scanagatta family wishes to thank Danielle of Providence Hospice and the caregivers of Clover Senior Care, specifically, Ami, Janine and Maria for their compassionate care and loving kindness shown to our father. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sonoma County Humane Society and Providence Hospice. Friends and family are invited to attend services on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 10:30AM. Arrangements have been entrusted to Parent-Sorensen Mortuary, 850 Keokuk Street, Petaluma, CA. Immediately following, funeral services will be held at Cypress Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, 430 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma, CA. A private celebration of life will be held for friends and family following funeral services.
