Alan Charles U’Ren (Al), 99 of Petaluma, CA passed away on October 1, 2022. Al was born November 4, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in nearby Rocky River. He attended Naval Officer Training School at Bowling Green University and Notre Dame University prior to marrying his beloved wife, Martha Fullerton, and serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, Al went back to school and graduated with a BA degree in Music from Kent State University.
Al and Martha struck out on their 67-year journey together with a three-year high school teaching stint in Oklahoma. When a teaching position opened up in sunny Southern California, they jumped at the chance and Al spent the next 34 years teaching Band, Orchestra and Driver’s Ed at San Bernadino and Pacific High Schools.
After retiring in 1984, Al and Martha purchased their dream mountain cabin in Forest Falls and Al began a full second career of volunteerism – first for 12 years at St. Bernadine’s Hospital in San Bernadino and then for nearly 20 years as a community service officer with the Petaluma Police Dept.
Al was a fabulous piano player who loved to share his musical ability and 40’s genre tunes with the Petaluma senior community. He was “Dad” to his daughter, Linda Knight of Orangevale, CA and son, Bob (Kris) U’Ren of Petaluma, CA. He was “Grandpa” to four grandchildren and “Papa” to seven great-grandchildren.
A private memorial is being planned. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that those who might wish to honor Al with a donation do so directly with Hospice of Petaluma.
