Alexander William Mitchell passed September 14, 2015 at the family ranch in Tomales, CA.
Born July 28, 1935 in Petaluma CA to Viola and Alexander Mitchell, Alex attended school in
Tomales, graduating from Tomales High School in 1953. He earned an Art degree from Pomona
College in 1957, completed military service at the Pentagon in 1960 and later became director of
creative services for Baker Furniture in Grand Rapids Michigan. After 36 years with Baker, Alex
retired to Sonoma to be closer to family. Inspired by the history of architecture and love of his
hometown, much of his time was spent in support of the Tomales Regional History Center.
Alex traveled the world in search of distinctive furniture and fine art, seeking pieces that intrigued
and inspired him. With an eye for design and a passion for beautiful things he exemplified panache.
His quick wit and vibrant character made him a friend to everyone, his grace evidenced by long
lasting friendships and love of family.
Alex will be greatly missed by his sister, June Hartmann of Redding, brother, John Mitchell of
Tomales, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and many, many dear friends.
Alex's ashes will be interred alongside his beloved family at the Tomales Presbyterian Church. A
memorial at the church will take place on October 3 at 2pm. All are welcome to attend and
commemorate his wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alexander
Mitchell Collection at the Tomales Regional History Center.
