Alyce Yayeko Sugiyama

Passed away at home in Petaluma, CA, October 8, 2021, at the age of 95. Devoted wife of the late Harry K. Sugiyama for 61 years. Cherished mother of Rodney Sugiyama (Signe) of Santa Rosa and Janel Sugiyama (John) of Petaluma. Adored grandmother of Leslie, Laura (Diego) and Abby Sugiyama.  Loving sister of Marian Ishizu of Petaluma and the late Florence Yamasaki, Henry Yamasaki, Jim Yamasaki, and Lorraine Yamasaki. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Alyce was born in Healdsburg and was reared and educated in Petaluma. She graduated high school while being interned at Amache Relocation Center in Granada, CO. She was married in 1953 to Harry until his death in 2014. Alyce was an active member of the Enmanji Buddhist Temple, Buddhist Women’s Association, Sonoma County JACL, Enman no Tomo, and the Sirettes. She enjoyed supporting her children in sports and scouting as well as watching her grandchildren in their activities. Alyce worked at Miller and Liberty Farm egg ranches and later was a food service manager with the Cotati-Rohnert Park School District. She and Harry always grew a bountiful summer garden of flowers and vegetables which they would share with relatives and friends. Alyce was quite adept at not only sewing clothing but she also sewed a few down jackets and sleeping bags that kept her family warm on many camping trips. Her love of the extended family took the form of hosting Easter dinners-egg hunts included-and Christmas dinners, too. Alyce was well-known for her baking. When Alyce would bring homemade pies to different celebrations, many would inquire which ones were hers so they could make sure to get a piece of yumminess. The same can be said for the many wedding cakes that she created for family and friends.

Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandma, Auntie, and Friend. Hers was a life well-lived.

A private Memorial Service will be held. Private inurnment at Cypress Hill Memorial Park. A future Celebration of Life to be planned post-COVID.
