Andy's 83 years began on his parent's small Petaluma family farm. He attended Waugh's grammar one room schoolhouse with a graduating class of 6. Andy left school at an early age to help on the family farm, later receiving his honorary high school diploma several years after devoting 17 years serving as school board trustee of the Cotati-Rohnert Park School District.
In 1954 at the age of 28 Andy chose to serve his country as a member of the US Army. He spent the majority of his 2 years of service in France before returning to the SF Presidio for his remaining term of service. During this time Andy fulfilled his commitment to his country and his family by commuting to SF after helping with the daily dairy responsibilities. He eventually was honorably discharged at the end of his service. He met the love of his life at the family ranch briefly before entering the army. Their love grew overseas through their letters and Andy married his sweetheart 2 weeks after completing his military service.
