Age 91, of Rohnert Park and long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Petaluma, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Calmer was born May 13, 1922, in Oslo, Norway to Gunder and Selma Olson.
He immigrated from Norway to the United States as a child. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1940 to 1945 as a Radioman First Class (ARM-1) on a PBY Catalina. He took part in the battle for the Aleutian islands. He met his late wife, Charlotte, (predeceased him on October 15, 2012), at a USO Dance in 1941 in Seattle,WA. After a very short courtship, they were married on December 24, 1941 (within days of the Pearl Harbor bombing). He had his orders to ship out the day after they were married. They were married for 70 wonderful years.
He enjoyed long walks with Charlotte and family barbeques. He was a charming, loving and intelligent man who was very committed to his family and cherished every minute of time he spent with them.
Calmer was a caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his sons, Roger Olson, Verner Olson (wife, Carol) and Timothy Olson (wife, Helen), his daughters Margaret Turner and Martha Jane Gamba (husband, Grant) , two sisters, Emma Isaacson and Marian G. Kerr, 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Monday, August 5th,11:00AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Petaluma.
