Erv Giacomini passed away peacefully at 99 years of age. He was born and raised in Petaluma to Maria and Otavio Giacomini on an eight-acre ranch. They operated a small ranch with cows and chickens. Alfalfa grew on 3 acres and was harvested by hand. His father made salami, wine and grappa in the basement of their home. The family called it the “Big Little Ranch”.
Erv attended St. Vincent DePaul Catholic School. He dropped out of high school because he felt it was his duty to fight in WWII and he enlisted in the U.S. Army. In December 1943 he was sent to Bend, OR for training in the Army Engineer Corp. On August 16, 1944, his company was deployed to the Asia Pacific Theater, destination, Philippine Islands where his company made 4 beach landings. By the end of his military service, March 29, 1946, he had been awarded a medal with a bronze arrowhead, the WWII victory medal, good conduct medal, a Philippines liberation ribbon and two bronze stars.
In 1948, Erv bought a car at the Dodge-Plymouth dealership in Petaluma. The young woman who worked there, Loretta Nella, immediately caught his attention. He asked her out on a date to go dancing. They ended up dancing their way to the altar, July 3, 1949. In 1950, Erv and Loretta purchased a large-sized lot. Their custom-built home was completed and move-in ready, June 13, 1951. It came with a bonus; their first child was born 7 days prior. Erv and Loretta raised five children in this home creating many memorable memories.
Erv had a long 37-year career as an ironworker, at J.H. Pomeroy Construction, making pre-stressed bridge pilings. He took pride in his work and was known as a hard worker. He retired at age 65. Sitting around the house was not his thing. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed a good conversation with everyone. His retirement job, yard maintenance, fit these requirements perfectly. Many of his customers were seniors. They soon became friends, which meant more talking than working; however, it was a win-win for all.
Erv was known for many things and one of them was his kindness. If a person asked for help, he was there. He enjoyed meeting friends for morning coffee or lunch. He looked forward to the annual Giacomini Boomtown blackjack tournaments. He liked bowling, golfing, attending functions with the Sirs, YMI, Native Sons of Italy, Veterans of Foreign War and other groups. Every Sunday, before 7:30 mass, he did the mass preparations and greeted parishioners. He was a proud veteran and enjoyed participating in the Petaluma Veterans Day Parade. In November 2013, he was one of the grand marshals and wore his military uniform that still fit him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta. They had a devoted and memorable marriage of 71 years. Erv is survived by his 5 children, Jeanne Giacomini (Don Pelton), Julie McGram (Dave Warner), Larry Giacomini (Sandi), Linda Schulz (Dan), Laurie Giacomini; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. We miss him deeply. If desired, contributions may be made in Erwin’s name to your charity of choice or to St. Vincent DePaul Church.
