Fred John Davidson

March 19, 1931 — October 16, 2016

Passed away peacefully on October 16, 2016, at his home in Penngrove. Husband to Irene of 62 years, father to Steve Davidson (Glenna) and Jeanette Orme, grandfather to Lindsey and Christopher Wendt, and Cerena Davidson. Fred left this world after a life filled with family, friends, and community. Born in Free State Danzig, (now Gdansk, Poland), of German ancestry, to parents Leo and Johanna Davidson. Fred weathered World War II as a child. He and his family had to leave Danzig after the war and settled in Bad Homberg near Frankfurt. In 1951 they emigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco. He met Irene in 1952 and shortly thereafter was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Germany where he served in the 104th Transportation Company as command vehicle driver and representing the commanding officer in dealings with the German authorities. He also received his U.S. citizenship while serving in the Army. Irene and family traveled to Germany in summer, 1954 and she and Fred married at the Army chapel in Ulm. Upon discharge they settled in Petaluma. Fred created his life here in California, becoming an accomplished construction plumber, who helped in the building of many real estate projects in Marin, San Francisco, and Sonoma counties, working within the Local Union 38 chapter of Plumbers and Pipefitters. He retired in 1991. Even though he retired, and despite injuries and much pain Fred stayed active with remodeling his homes, and enjoying some gaming thrills in Reno, and our local casinos. He and Irene made five trips back to Germany visiting relatives and traveling. In turn they hosted many of their relatives and friends at their home in Penngrove. He left his loving touch on the hearts of all, giving his family and friends wonderful experiences and joyful memories to hold onto. In Fred’s younger years, he was a member of the Penngrove Social Firemen, the German Mannerchor and project leader of his son, Steven’s, Boy Scout trope. Fred will be remembered as a true gentleman and hard worker, with a kind nature, a twinkle in his eye, strong values and a deep love for his family. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, brother’s Gerhard and Alfred Davidowski and John Davidson, son-in-law James Orme and brother-in-laws William Mahrt, Robert Morris and John Moniz. He leaves behind his sister-in-laws, Louise Mahrt, Marlene Moniz, Deborah Kelly and the late Hildegard Davidowski, plus many nieces and nephews, and several cousins in Germany. Memorial Services will be held at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary & Crematory, in Petaluma on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Entombment, Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Petaluma. A celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rancho Adobe Firefighters Association, Hospice of Petaluma or the Penngrove Social Firemen, in Fred’s honor.
