GARY PAUL JOHNSON pssed away October 24th, 2015. Devoted husband to Tammy Johnson, cherished father to Matthew and Gregory Johnson, step father to Jennifer, James and Joseph. Adored grandfather to Ashley and Angelina Johnson in addition to Elizabeth, Andrew, Sabastian, Johnny. Son to the late Virginia Smith and Harold Johnson. Brother to the late Norman Johnson. Proud owner and Papa to Luka.
Gary was born in San Francisco, CA in 1944. He moved and lived the entirety of his life in Petaluma, CA. He graduated from Petaluma High School in 1962. He gave so much back to the community with which he lived. Coaching both soccer and baseball for his children. President of the American Little League for numerous seasons, and best umpire the Petaluma Little League has ever experienced.
Gary's famous quote was, "I have never missed a paycheck in 52 years." He worked consistently from 1962 until 1998 for the United States Government. First at Hunters Point Shipyard, then, Mare Island where he retired in 1998. Retirement didn't last long, as Gary contracted back at Mare Island for Lennar Developers until he became ill in 2014. He knew every building, and nook and cranny of Mare Island and served as a valuable resource after the base was closed.
Gary had numerous lifelong friends, too many to name. He believed in working hard, and playing hard as well. He loved cruising and skiing. He was a huge sports fan, loving the Giants, 49ers and Nascar. He truly was a throwback person, a "gear head" and loved his ‘40 Ford.
Donations greatly appreciated and can be made to Hospice by the Bay. Private services will be held.
