George John Jacovides, 98, of Windsor, California passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, November 23, 2022 under the close watch and care of his family. Beloved husband of Sophia Jacovides for over 52 years, he leaves behind three children: Joanne Jacovides of Santa Rosa, James Jacovides of Shannon, Illinois, and Kathy Jacovides of Windsor, and four grandchildren- Irene and Jake Van Riper and Jamie and George Jacovides. George was born on May 4, 1924 in Boston, Massachusetts and was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church. He was the son of John and Anna Nalpantoglou Jacovides and brother to Myrofora Jatho and Chressie Jacovides Scarbro. He followed in his father’s footsteps by going to sea. George graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1943 and served in the U.S. Merchant Marine as a licensed engineering officer from January 1944 to April 1953. George supported the Allied war effort in the North Atlantic by delivering critical supplies to London, U.K. and to beachheads in France. He married following his sea service and spent his career as a draftsman working for PG&E in California. He was honored with a Congressional Gold Medal in 2020 in recognition of his time in the U.S. Merchant Marine. George was a lover of philosophy, big-band swing music, and often wrote poetry from the heart. He was known for his wry sense of humor and for his eminent wisdom. He was generous with time, often stopping to talk to people he met along the way on his many travels. George was a devoted husband and father taking great pride in watching over his family.
