Ingeburg Renate Schuhmacher

Oct 3, 1937 — Sep 28, 2026

Petaluma, California

Ingeburg Renate Schuhmacher was born on October 3, 1937 in Ebingen, Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsa Sting Jerg and Traugott Friedrich (Fritz) Jerg, and by her sister Else Jerg who passed away on the same day four years earlier.

Inge was a spirited, adventurous, and independent child. As a teen, she went on many biking vacations with her girlfriend Renate. It was on one of those trips to the Bodensee that she met her future husband, Paul.

Inge and Paul were married on May 14, 1960 and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year. Early on, they worked in Switzerland for a year when Paul got a job offer to work as a pastry chef at a Swiss restaurant in Puerto Rico. Paul went ahead to Puerto Rico while Inge got her paperwork in order. They ultimately decided to meet in San Mateo, California at Paul’s uncle's house.

Inge and Paul owned Starlight Bakery in San Mateo before moving to Petaluma and purchasing Joe’s A-1 Bakery in 1979. The Schuhmacher family ran the bakery for 28 years.

Inge was one of the original super moms. She managed to run a full-time business while lovingly raising three children and providing a wonderful home. She was the best mom!

Inge leaves behind her son Roy and daughter-in-law Sandy, and her daughter Lisa. She was predeceased by her youngest son Ryan (Meri), who died of cancer in 2012—her greatest heartbreak.

Her beloved grandchildren include Roy Jr. (Veronica), Christopher (Lacey), Daniel (Lindsey), Max (Kyra), Jack, Evelynn (Jude), and Luke.

Her treasured great-grandchildren include Abigail, Ella, Zachariah, Ezekiel, Baby Schuhmacher (due in November), Oliver, Lincoln, Addison, and William.

Inge will be remembered for her deep love of family, hosting large gatherings, traveling the world with family and friends, her homemade spaetzle and German potato salad, her famous salad dressing, and the frequent reminder: “Don’t put it down, put it away.”
