Janet Louise Nielsen

Janet passed away on Thursday September 8, 2022 after experiencing an intracranial hematoma, and a valiant post-operative battle.

Born in Evergreen Park, IL. Janet finished high school while simultaneously traveling with Up With People; an international organization that reaches communities and people across the globe through music, messaging and volunteer service. The Up With People organization and the resulting friendships remained dear to Janet’s heart throughout her life.

Janet continued her formal education ultimately receiving a Masters Degree in Psychology. Her study of psychology and early childhood development in her undergrad years served her well in her love of children.  Janet developed close and lasting relationships with families she served in the San Francisco Bay area, being thought of as a fun and caring nanny.  Janet’s professional career also included positions in public television broadcasting at KQED-TV, and FILOLI, a nonprofit organization and site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Janet's sense of humor and directness were just two characteristics obvious to those who knew her.  She loved children, gardening, nature, cooking with new recipes and sharing new experiences with friends and family.  Janet will surely be missed by many.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Marge Nielsen; and is survived by her sisters; Linda (Wayne) Leopold, Cathy; her brother Ted; nieces Beth (Brian) Gosnell; Lisa Leopold (Manoj Ramakrishnan); Christine; Lindsay; grand-nieces Kendall; Anjali; Ariya and former spouse Suheil Harb, along with many cousins and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in Janet’s memory.
