Jeanette "Jan" Lew

Jeanette “Jan” Lew, 94, of San Francisco passed away on November 11,2022 at Alma Via Assisted Care facility.

Jan was predeceased by her husband, Norman Lew, and is survived by her son Lance Lew (Roberta) and grandmother to Spencer Lew;  loving aunt to Frances Lew-Koike (Wayne) Monica Chun (Victor) and Teresa Wong (Eric). Survived by her brother Tom Liu (Lorrie) and predeceased by her siblings Emma Lew (Tim), Matilda Law (Ed), Fremont Lui (Gloria).

Jan was born on May 28,1928 in San Francisco.  She attended SF landmark schools like Jean Parker Elementary, High School of Commerce and Chung Wah Chinese language school. In 1960 met Norman Lew at a family picnic in Golden Gate Park while feeding ducks with his son and her nieces. They were married at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Chinatown and settled in Petaluma, “the country” as Jan called it.” Norman, was a part-owner of Petaluma Grocery Supermarket and would find his new bride’s “can-do” attitude representing the store and ability to provide community leadership- a perfect asset for a business in a small town.

After retiring from the Franchise Tax Board as a tax collector in 1987, Jan continued to use her skills to assist and share.  She was proficient in both Cantonese and English and worked to support the formation of the Redwood Empire Chinese Association, volunteering during tax -filing season and teaching senior driving classes.  Never having idle hands, she could interweave knitting, quilting & sewing techniques like a pro and always ready to join a game of mahjong, pinochle, cribbage at the local community center or while on a trip, visiting thirty-five countries in her lifetime.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 with Visitation from 11Am to 1 PM, with a Buddhist service at 1PM at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary, 850 Keokuk St., Petaluma

Burial service will be held on Saturday November 19, 2022 at The Chapel at Woodlawn at 10 AM, Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1000 El Camino Real, Colma.
