The only child of John and Agnes Welch, Joanne lived in Fort Worth until leaving for Trinity College in Washington, D.C. where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She loved the outdoors, and each summer would pack her Volkswagon bus with camping gear and her six kids and head to Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite.
