John Backer

John (Jack) Charles Backer passed away on July 26th, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Clinton, Iowa on 8.26.1939 to John and Ella Backer. The family moved to Penngrove in 1952 to start a chicken ranch. In 1957, he graduated from Petaluma High School and joined the U.S. Navy. When he returned, John started a painting business with his father, which he eventually took over. A long standing member of the Hermann Sons Lodge in Petaluma as well as the Elks and Moose Lodges, John also volunteered at COTS. He enjoyed a variety of interests including fishing, duck hunting, traveling, coin collecting, bird watching, scuba diving, bowling, playing cards (especially Skat, a German card game), camping and a good joke. He is survived by his devoted wife Sue, three daughters Carolyn (Jackson), Lori (Woodrow), and Sandra (Robert) and 3 grandchildren Kallen, Reece, and Lorenna. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister (Shirley Madden).

In Celebration of his Life, and at his request, we are having an Open House Backyard BBQ on 8.28.21 from 2 pm to 5 pm at his home in Penngrove. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to Sutter Care at Home – Santa Rosa Hospice or COTS Mary Isaak Center, Petaluma.
