With deep sorrow we announce the passing of John Finkbohner. John passed away peacefully at home at the age of 97. John lived a vibrant life defined by service to his country, devotion to his community and an unwavering love for his family and personal passions. At the age of 17, John enlisted in the US Army to serve in World War II, he also served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War; launching a remarkable 31 year military career with multiple ribbons and medals, including The Bronze Star Medal. After retirement John continued to serve in civilian roles working in construction before joining the Sonoma County Sheriff’s. He spent 10 years in the detention division and received The Sheriff’s highest award, The Medal of Valor. Active and proud member of numerous clubs and organizations: Shriners, 7-11 Lions, Elks Club, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, Knight’s of Columbus, Freemasonry (F&AM), National Association of Uniformed Services (NAUS), Scottish Rite, 24th ID Victory Division, 97th Battalion and Sons in Retirement (SIR). His passion for fostering community spirit was further exemplified as one of the founding members of the Casa Grande High School Booster Club (1972). He also dedicated a decade to coaching his sons in Little League baseball, mentoring young athletes with enthusiasm, instilling values of teamwork and perseverance. Through these affiliations, John built lifelong friendships and made significant contributions to local initiatives, leaving an enduring legacy. John and his wife Bettie were avid travelers. Some of the destinations they traveled were Puerto Rico, Germany, Alaska, Panama, South Lake Tahoe and Hawaii (Kauai being the favorite). Yet, his true love was bowling-a passion that began during his military years, bowling up until the age of 92 when COVID restrictions halted his play. Was a member of the United States Bowling Congress. His skill of dedication to sports is celebrated with over 100 trophies and awards displayed proudly in his family room. John was a beloved husband to Bettie for 72 years, a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Devoted father to his sons: Ron(Sandy), Don(Deborah) and daughter Bonnie. Proud grandpa to six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his wife, Bettie Finkbohner & son, John Finkbohner III. The family will be having a private military service and burial.
