John W. "Jack" Hill

September 28, 1927 — February 4, 2015

At the age of 87, JACK HILL left this world to join family and friends who have gone on before him. Born in Reno, NV, to Thurman and Rosalind Parsons. Jack and his mother moved to California in the early 30's where he attended Old Mill School and Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley. He enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17, and in 1946 he enrolled in the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate Program. When WWII ended he enrolled at UC Berkeley to earn an engineering degree and was registered in the states of California, Nevada and Oregon. After working for several engineering firms in San Francisco and Marin, Jack opened his own office in Novato and eventually in Rohnert Park and his hometown of Reno. The Novato office provided services for engineering, surveying and architecture. In addition, John was the outside Consulting Civil Engineer for the City of Larkspur for over 30 years. Jack was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in San Rafael, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, and a member of the Petaluma Elks and Elk's RV Club. He was preceded in death by his mother Rosalind Hill, father and step mother, Thurman and Carol Parsons of Reno, sister Karen Jackson (Andrew) Boston. He is survived by his wife Shirley Hill of Penngrove, his daughter Jacqueline Durand (John) of Wilton, his son David Hill of Coalinga, and daughter Ann Green (Rick) and grandchildren Shelby and T.J. Green of Petaluma. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 14th at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church, 125 Sonoma Mtn. Parkway, Petaluma. A reception will follow at the church. Family assisted by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Petaluma.
