John E. "Jack" Mattos - John (Jack) Mattos passed away peacefully at home on December 7, 2010 in the company of family. He was 94 years old. Jack was predeceased by Midge, his wife of 65 years, who passed away May 28, 2010. He and Midge had moved to Petaluma in June, 2009 to be close to their 2 daughters. Everyone who knew Jack loved him. He was an avid golfer and sports fan, and still played golf weekly at 94 years. Jack was born June 13, 1916 in Berkeley CA, raised there and in Albany CA. In 1933 he graduated from Berkeley High where he played many team sports and won medals on the swim team. He then attended UC Berkeley, where he continued to compete on the football, baseball, and swim teams. He remained a lifelong fan of Cal Bears sports, and he attended Berkeley High Class Reunions into the 21st century. Jack is survived by his 3 loving children: daughters Diane Regan-Tucker and Sally Archbold in Petaluma, and son John Mattos, Jr. in Ft. Collins CO; sons-in-law Scott Tucker and Jim Archbold, and daughter-in-law Connie Mattos. He also leaves his 5 loving grandchildren (Michael Regan-Tucker, Katie and Jack Archbold, Marissa Mattos, and Michelle Tucker), and 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his older brother, Cliff. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held for Jack at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 27 at Petaluma Golf and Country Club, 1500 Country Club Dr., Petaluma, reception immediately following. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran St, Petaluma 94952. Family assisted by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Petaluma. In 1938, Jack went to work for U.S. Steel Corp. in San Francisco, beginning a career with U.S. Steel that lasted 42 years. He started in the mailroom, but his talents were soon recognized, and he quickly moved up to become a salesman. He met Midge at work, and they were married in 1945. Jack and Midge spent their first 12 years together living respectively in San Francisco, Albany, Stockton, and Walnut Creek CA, moving as Jack was promoted into different sales territories with U.S. Steel. During that time their 3 children, Diane, John, and Sally, were born. Jack and Midge became members of Diablo Country Club, playing golf and socializing regularly with friends, customers, and colleagues. In 1956 Jack was promoted to Sales Manager of the U.S. Steel Sales Office in Los Angeles. He moved the family to Whittier CA, where they lived until Jack retired from U.S. Steel in 1980. In Whittier, Jack and Midge became active members of Hacienda Country Club, and enjoyed many friends, golfing, and social activities there. An accomplished golfer, Jack often competed in golf tournaments, and took home many golf trophies and awards. He strongly supported his children playing sports and attended most of their swim meets, ball games, etc. to cheer them on.
