John Michael Miller

Surrounded by his loving family, John Michael Miller passed away in his home from a sudden illness at the age of 77 on March 8th, 2016. A third generation native Californian, Mike was born in Oakland, California to Wendell and Kathryn Miller on November 30th, 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Peter Miller, sister Lucy Mann, son Mark Christopher and daughter Michelle Miller. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Marilyn Miller, son Mathew (TJ) of Fresno, Mark (Marci) of Santa Rosa and daughter Maureen Colburn (Todd) of Clovis, as well as grandchildren Wesley Miller, Kayla Miller, Alex Scott, Madeline Miller, Kathryn Colburn, Maxwell Colburn and numerous nieces, nephews and other close family and friends. Mike graduated from Oakland High School in 1956, attended Oakland City College and San Francisco State University, graduating in 1962 with his bachelor's degree. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1962, working as an appraiser for the Sonoma County Assessor's office. He also worked as a Real Estate Appraiser for Great Western Savings and Loan and Washington Mutual before starting his own business Miller Appraisal Service in 1995. He retired in 2004. He was a longtime member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Holy Spirit Men's Club, and was a volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Mike enjoyed playing golf, tent and RV camping, reading, playing Mexican Train with family, hiking, bicycling and gardening. Throughout his life his favorite vacation spot was Pinecrest Lake in the Sierra mountains. He also enjoyed family trips to the coast and traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and Oakland A's spring training in Arizona. Mike was a gentle soul, always thinking of others. He was loved by all, and staying connected with family was his top priority. A Memorial Mass for Mike will be held on March 19th, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Holy Spirit Church (1244 St. Francis Rd., Santa Rosa, CA, 95409) with a reception immediately following in the church hall. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Spirit St. Vincent De Paul Society or Sutter Care at Home Hospice. Celebration of Life
