John L. Schwartz, (Retired) Usmc

Col. John L. "Jack""" "" Schwartz, USMC (Retired) - On November 29, 2010, in Petaluma. Jack was born in Petaluma on May 18, 1923. He was the son of Walter H. G. and Nellie Chapel Schwartz of Petaluma. Jack joined the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II and landed at Iwo Jima. He graduated from Officer Candidate School at the University of Redlands and the University of San Francisco, where he received a B.S. in economics. Jack re-enlisted in the Marines in 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and retired after 34 years of active-duty military service in 1975. He was a member of the VFW, Sons of Italy, Elks Club, Native Sons of the Golden West and other civic organizations. He is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, Nina Klemenok Schwartz. He is the father of Jacqueline Robertson of Petaluma; Carolyn Troiano of Herndon, Virginia; Walter Schwartz of Fox Island, Washington; and the late Marilyn Larson of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Also survived by his sons-in-law, Raymond Larson of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania and Michael Troiano of Herndon, Virginia; and daughter-in-law Margot Eigen of Fox Island, Washington. Loving grandfather of Christopher, Benjamin and Gregory Larson; Jason, Nicholas and Marissa Troiano; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dear brother of the late Linus Schwartz. The Colonel loved his country, and above all, his family and friends. And, he was known to tell a story or two (whether you wanted to listen or not)! A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Petaluma, CA . In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations in his memory to the Marilyn S. Larson Scholarship Fund at the Mercersburg Academy, 300 East Seminary Street, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania 17236; the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 3800 Fettler Park Drive, Ste. 104, Dumfries, VA 22025; or the Marine Mammal Center, 2000 Bunker Road, Fort Cronkhite, Sausalito, California 94965.
