Joe was born and raised in Daly City and San Francisco; He was the oldest of 6 children, all have preceded him in death, with the exception the youngest, Maureen Malenburg of San Jose CA, age 82. Joe attended and graduated from, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Daly City. In 1944 thru 1946, Joe served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII; during which time he met his wife, Dolores Santhon of Kalamazoo Michigan. They were married for 54 years until her passing in September 1999.
Joe was extremely active in the up-and-coming housing community of South San Francisco; where he and Doll lived until 1971. Thus, relocating his family to Petaluma. Joe spent many years commuting to the San Francisco International Airport, picking-up and delivering freight/packages for Airborne Freight.
Joe worked as a Union Teamster since 1952; within the International Brotherhood of Teamsters/Western Conference of Teamsters; Union Local 85 in San Francisco, and later Local 624 in Sonoma County, now known as 665. During his career Joe was elected and held positions of Vice President and Business Agent of Local 85; as well as Business Agent in Local 624. He retired at 63, after 28 years of service with Airborne Express.
Joe was a devoted father of 4 children; the late Sharon Adams, Stacey Powers, Scott Powers and late Sean Powers. Grandfather to Brian Adams (Delia), Anthony Taverna, Nicole Gromala (Ivan), and the late Lil Sean Powers; He’s leaving behind a legacy of four great grandchildren; Marissa and Julia Adams and Wyatt and Caden Gromala.
Joe was deeply involved in his children’s’ sports and hobbies; serving on PHS Athletic Boosters Club and had the job of “transportation manager” for his children’s’ sports, and 4-H/FFA livestock at the local county and State Fairs; thus, his transportation manager duties continued with his grandchildren Anthony and Nicole.
Joe along with his “Doll”, were avid fans of the SF 49’ers. Some of his happier moments were settling in front of the TV to watch the 49’ers. But he said he enjoyed admiring his Doll watching her 49ers play more than the game itself. After retiring in 1990, He became a member of the Native Sons, and was involved in the Teamsters’ retiree organization. Later He returned to his religious upbringing as a member of St Vincent Parish and St James Church.
Joe will be remembered most for the sparkle in his eyes, the smile on his face and passion for helping others in need.
