Joyce Hurley passed away peacefully in Santa Rosa on October 31, 2021, at the age of 92. Much beloved wife of the late George Hurley, her husband of 55 years. Beloved mother of Richard (Jennifer) Hurley, Janet (Tim) Souza, Darrell (Julie) Hurley, and Allison (Russell) Wahl. Beloved grandma of Mary Richardson, Richard Hurley, Sarah Hurley, Sheena Hurley, Stephanie Hurley, Steven Hurley, and Landyn Wahl. Loving great-grandma to four great-grandchildren, and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews.
The 7th of eight children, Joyce was born in Eureka, Utah, in 1929 to Harold and Eva Beck. When she was one, her family moved to Jackson, CA. After her 5th grade year, they moved to Petaluma, where she lived until 2018. In 1951, she married George. Joyce had various jobs over the years, working for Sunset Line & Twine, JCPenney, Luncheon Is Served, and Kmart, but her favorite job was being a mom. Being a wife and mom, and later a grandmother, mattered more to her than anything else in life. She enjoyed supporting her children’s interests, serving in leadership roles in the PTA, Bluebirds, 4-H and Rainbow Girls. Joyce also was involved in many community organizations including the Rebekah Lodge, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Petaluma Women’s Club. She and some friends formed “A Gathering of Good Friends”, a charity group that did bake sales, luncheons, and donations to raise money to fill local needs, such as Kenilworth Jr. High’s music program, or filling up backpacks with school supplies for young students. She coached a Mini League team for the Petaluma Girls Softball Assn. with two of her sisters. The three of them also spent many years bowling together in a women’s league. Joyce enjoyed any excuse for a family gathering, and loved celebrating the holidays, especially Christmas. She enjoyed cooking and she was known for great desserts. She loved people and had many long friendships. Joyce was a happy, generous, and loving person, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Service will be held at 12:30 on Friday, November 12, at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary, 850 Keokuk St., Petaluma.
