Justin N. Mcintyre

Father Justin N. McIntyre - Died peacefully at the age of 92 on March 30, 2012 in Oakland, CA after a courageous battle with cancer. Father McIntyre was born in Rock Island, Illinois on June 5, 1919 and attended schools in Oak Park, Illinois. He received a football scholarship to Columbia University, New York and played as an offensive tackle for three years. He graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and served in Panama until 1946. After World War II he worked for a Catholic newspaper in Chicago for a few years. Then he headed west to Oregon and worked for a newspaper while attending the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he received his Masters Degree in Journalism in 1953. He later moved to California and worked as a high school teacher in Sacramento and Mountain View. Beginning in 1963 for the next fifteen years he taught Journalism at City College of Sacramento. In 1978 he believed he was called to the priesthood and was accepted by the Diocese of Santa Rosa. He attended the Beda College in Rome, a seminary that trained older students for the priesthood. He was ordained to the Priesthood for service in the Diocese of Santa Rosa on June 14, 1981 in Rome. He was in active ministry for ten years serving as Parochial Vicar at St. Helena Parish, St. Helena, St. Sebastian Parish, Sebastopol and St. Rose Parish, Santa Rosa. He also served as the managing editor of the Diocesan newspaper, The Redwood Crozier. Father McIntyre retired from active priestly ministry in 1990. Father McIntyre was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister. He is survived by a nephew, Larry Regan of Chicago. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Eugene, Santa Rosa, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 11:00 am. It will be preceded by the recitation of the Rosary at 10:30 am. Father McIntyre will be buried with his parents in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.
