Leonard Henry Volker, 91, peacefully passed away at his home in Petaluma, California, on July 19, 2024.
Born on September 6, 1932, in Scribner, Nebraska, Leonard was the eldest son of Arnold and Elsie Volker. As the oldest of three boys, he embraced his role with a strong sense of responsibility, helping guide his brothers through life on the family farm. After moving to California, Leonard graduated from Petaluma High School and began working alongside his father and uncles, building homes on the Westside of Petaluma. He later transitioned to a long and fulfilling career at PG&E, where he served with pride for 38 years in various positions, ranging from lineman to customer service manager.
In 1955, Leonard married the love of his life, Alberta “Sue” Groff, at St. Vincent’s Church in Petaluma. Their 65-year marriage was filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Together, they raised two children, Stuart and Eldean, and became pillars in their community through coaching youth sports, attending Cal football games, and cheering on the San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors.
In retirement, Leonard embraced the cherished role of “Papa,” lovingly caring for his grandchildren near and far. As for his local grandchildren, Amber and Adam Baggenstos, Leonard was more than afterschool care, he was a coach, mentor, teacher and created lasting memories through their many adventures over the years. His passions in life were simple yet profound: family, sports, tending to his land, and caring for his pet turtle, Forrest.
Leonard’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to friends, neighbors, caregivers, and extended family for their support and companionship during his final years. Leonard enjoyed every phone call and visit made. He was a man deeply loved by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.
Leonard is survived by his sibling Ray Volker (Pam), children Eldean Volker (Dave) and Stuart Volker (Lesley), grandchildren Amber Wells, Adam Baggenstos (Sophia), Avery Volker (Bennett), Emily Volker, Joshua Volker and his great-grandchildren Naomi and Amethyst Baggenstos. His passing is preceded by his parents Arnold and Elsie Volker, brother Dean Volker (Leeann) and spouse Sue Volker.
In memory of Leonard, his immediate family is arranging for a memorial bench to be placed at the new Petaluma Community Sports Fields on East Washington honoring his love of sports. We invite you to visit and remember him there in the near future
