Raised in Ohio and New Jersey, she attended Rider College. She met her future husband, Tony Fama (on a blind date) in 1936 and they were married in San Francisco three years later. Tony enlisted as an officer in the US Army in 1941. While awaiting deployment, their first child, Joe, was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Lois lived in California with her in-laws for part of the war years, and then returned to her own family in New Jersey. Upon Tonyâ??s discharge, the family settled in San Jose, where their second son, Denis was born. Two years later, they opened their first of several grocery stores in San Francisco which they operated during the Fifties. Their third child, Monica was born in the City during this time. Lois labored tirelessly during these years, raising a family and spending 10-12 hours a day working in the store. She made many sacrifices to send her children to private schools and was a true â??Supermomâ?
