MARGARET LaVERNE "VERNIE" PENGEL entered the kingdom of heaven on December 30, 2017 in Santa Rosa surrounded by her loving family at the age of 87. Devoted wife of the late Henry G. Pengel. Beloved mother of Margie Minner (Dave), Mark and Donna Pengel (deceased), Mindy Pengel (Denise), Mary Lou Bahn (Albert), Marie Elyse Bernardi Curzon (Tom), Michelle Campagna (Mitch), Matthew Pengel (Karla), Miriam Pengel (Debbie), Molly Pengel (Shawna), Maura Pengel. Mother-in-law of the late Tom Bernardi. Adored grandmother of Christopher (Samantha), Joe (Heather), Emily Minner and Jenny Minner Loewenthal (Casey); Becky Simon (Jamie), Jason Pengel (Andrea), Amy Erta (Raymond), Amanda, Jessica and Jarred Pengel; Natalie Bahn Vano (Andrew) and Charles Bahn; Greg Bernardi and Elyse Bernardi (Ben Anderson); Ryan, Sean and Patrick Curzon; Katie Campagna Asher (Jesse), Cindy and Rosie Campagna; Andrew and Adam Pengel; and Kristian and Sebastian Gallegos. Cherished great-grandmother of Annalise, Vivian, and Henry (III) Pengel; Maeve and Gwendolyn Minner; and Olivia Erta. Dear daughter of the late Margaret and Charles O’Callaghan. Loving sister of Charles Donald O’Callaghan, Theresa Cutler (Bill), Michael O’Callaghan (Leila), Kathy Delahunty (Steve), and John O’Callaghan (Jennifer). Adored daughter-in-law of the late Mary and Henry Pengel. Survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Vernie was born and raised in San Francisco. She attended St. Cecilia’s Grammar School and Presentation High School. She and Hank were active parishioners of St. Cecilia’s Parish where they raised their ten children. She was fondly referred to as the Mother of the World by all who knew her. Vernie worked alongside her father as a realtor at O’Callaghan Family Real Estate in San Francisco and continued her passion for real estate after moving to Sonoma County in 1994. It was her Faith, Family, and her Trust in God that were the guiding lights in her life. She was a woman of great conviction and devotion.
Friends and family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass, Friday, January 5, 2018 at 10:30 am at Star of the Valley Catholic Church, 545 White Oak Dr., Santa Rosa. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the Lafferty and Smith Colonial Chapel, 4321 Sonoma Hwy., Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities or your favorite charity. Interment: Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Santa Rosa.
