Maria Luz Rivera was born and raised in Mascota, Jalisco, Mexico to Abundia Diaz and Viviano Curiel. She passed away peacefully in Encinitas, California on October 8, 2026, at the age of 98, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was a force to be reckoned with, she was strong-willed, quick-witted, and sometimes delightfully mischievous. Her vibrant personality, sharp sense of humor, and fun-loving spirit made her unforgettable to all who knew her. She cherished her family and friends and touched countless lives with her warmth, wisdom, and generosity. Throughout her life, she was a constant advocate for the immigrant community, offering support, guidance, and encouragement to those around. She worked for many years as a nurse’s assistant before choosing to dedicate herself to what mattered most to her: her family. As a homemaker, she lovingly raised her family and devoted herself to caring for those she held dear. Her home was a place of love, comfort, and wisdom, and she found joy in sharing her life experience and advice with her family and community. She had a special passion for gardening and raising chickens and took great pride in hybridizing her beloved roses. Like the flowers she so carefully nurtured, she brought beauty and life to the world around her. She also loved mariachi music, which reflected the vibrant spirit and cultural roots she carried through her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nicanor Rivera. They were married for 47 years. She is survived by her devoted children Rosa Rivera (Brett Carver); grandchildren Erik Carver, Emilio Carver, Hope Carver; Henry Rivera (Sol); step grandchildren Briana Kier and Mariela Mendez.
Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void, her legacy lives on through the family she raised, the friendships she treasured, the community she supported, and the countless memories she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered as a strong, compassionate, witty, and fun-living woman whose presence brought laughter, wisdom, and love to those fortunate enough to know her. Her sprit will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who loved her, just like the roses she so lovingly tended.
