Mary Louise Matthias

October 8, 1930 — May 24, 2022

Mary was born October 8, 1930 in Petaluma, CA. at the family home on Western Avenue.  She went to Petaluma High School and graduated in 1949, married Ed Matthias December 3, 1949 and they had four children, Donna, Wayne, Paul and Allen.   Mary worked various jobs before she had her children. When the kids were young she took in ironing for the neighbor lady and babysat for several families.  But her longest job was working at the used paperback bookstore in Petaluma for twenty plus years until it was sold.  There she made many friends that would come to visit and purchase books.     Mom made multiple trips back to Hannibal, Missouri with her parents as a young child.  When she was a young mother she enjoyed camping every year at Yosemite, the Russian River, Bodega Bay and Benbow State Park.     For years it was a tradition that mom made homemade Aebleskivers on New Year's Day morning.  All were invited to enjoy this Danish breakfast.  She stood over the stove and cooked for as long as people showed up and wanted to enjoy a plate of Aebleskivers.  She ended up making several batches before we were all full.     When mom went to live in the residential care facility she started to do cross stitch pillowcases.  She made pillowcases for everyone in the family and friends.  She also enjoyed her word search puzzle books, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy word search calendars and old western movie channel.     Mary's daughter Donna has three children, Kerri Miller, her husband Eric and great-grandson Caleb,  Dan Lemos and Ashleigh Christie and her fiance Colton Davis.  Wayne has three children, Bryan, Chad and his wife Noel and Anthony.  Paul and his wife Donna have two children Justin and Megan.  Allen has a daughter Samantha and son Austin, wife LeeAnn and three step-daughters.    Mom passed peacefully in her sleep with all four of her kids by her side.  She will be missed by family and friends but we know she is at peace and with dad. The family would like to express deep gratitude to all of the nurses of Providence Hospice of Petaluma, and especially Nurse Nicola, for devoted compassion in Mary's transition.
