Born December 10, 1949 in San Francisco; passed away peacefully on June 1, 2017 in Santa Rosa from complications of Lewy Body Dementia.
Devoted wife of James Shaw of Guerneville. Cherished mother of Andrea "Andi" Shaw of Cotati, James "Jamie" Shaw of Guerneville, and Nathaniel "Marty" Shaw of Roseville. Beloved grandmother of Matthew, Andrew James, and Dillyn. Loving sister of Andrew G. Bundy (Paulette) of Foster City, Helen B. Medsger (Ralph) of Santa Rosa, Edward J. Bundy (Eva) of UT, Christopher B. Bundy (P.J.) of NC, and the late Therese M. Bundy. Survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Maureen was born in San Francisco, but reared and educated in San Mateo. She graduated as her class salutatorian from Notre Dame High School in Belmont, and went on to receive her bachelor's degree in Social Welfare from the College of Notre Dame, magna cum laude. She continued her education at UC Berkeley, completing her Master's in Social Welfare (MSW), specializing in Gerontology. Maureen would later return to the College of Notre Dame as an Assistant Professor in the Behavioral Science Dept.
Maureen married the love of her life, Jim, at the age of twenty. In 1980, they moved their family from San Mateo to Guerneville, and she began her career at Catholic Charities. Initially, Maureen started by resettling refugees from Southeast Asia. Later, as Director of the Department on Aging, she established the Alzheimer's Respite Center, now The Shaw Center for Memory Care, and authored the grant that funded the Redwood Caregiver Resource Center. In 1988, Maureen became the Executive Director of Catholic Charities. During her tenure, she developed programs throughout the Redwood Empire, most notably, the 138-bed Family Support Center was opened for homeless families, in addition to the Homeless Services Center for adults.
For her outstanding service, Maureen received numerous awards and honors, among them having a park setting at the Vigil Light Apartments for Seniors named the "Maureen Shaw Commons", the Jewel of a Woman award from the Girl Scouts of Konocti Council, the Spirit of Service Award from the Sonoma County Task Force for the Homeless, and the St. Julie Billiart Award for Outstanding Community Service from the College of Notre Dame.
Throughout her illness, Maureen and her primary caregiver, her sister Helen, participated in over 20 Parkinson's Disease and dementia research studies in their many efforts to shed light on and further research into a cure for her disease.
Friends and family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass, Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10:30 am at St. Rose Catholic Church, 398 Tenth Street, Santa Rosa. A Vigil Service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 7:00 pm at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 3730 Bohemian Hwy., Occidental.
