May Tomasetti passed away peacefully on March 24, 2016, in Petaluma. She was born in Petaluma on March 25, 1921 to Otto and Linda (Moretti) Tomasetti. Loving sister-in-law of Eda Tomasetti and adored aunt of Linda and Douglas Karr, Peter and Cathy Tomasetti, all of Petaluma. Preceded in death by her beloved brother, Melvin Tomasetti, sister and brother-in-law, Aileen & Harold Bettinelli.
May grew up in rural west Petaluma attending the one room schoolhouse there and graduating from Petaluma High School. Along with her work on the family ranch, she was employed at Redwood Dairy Drive-In, See's Candy, Rex Tomasini Hardware, Singer Company, and tutor and library assistant at Petaluma High School. She traveled to 17 western countries in Europe, Canada, Mexico and vacationed with family around the United States, including Hawaii.
She enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and being in her garden; sharing her flowers and serving the Petaluma community. In 1989, the Petaluma Garden Club honored her with a life membership in the California Garden, Club. She happily shared her garden on a 1996 garden tour to benefit the Petaluma Museum. That same year the Luther Burbank Garden district awarded her the Best Old Fashioned Garden.
May's volunteer activities and dedication to the Petaluma community were recognized with numerous awards. She was honored in 1983 to be Petaluma's Citizen of the Year and in 1985 received the community service award from the Parks and Recreation Commission. At that time, she was the coordinator at Lucchesi Park Senior Center. The City of Petaluma named her Volunteer of the Year in 1988. May was proud to be president of the Petaluma Valley Hospital Auxiliary when the new hospital was opened in 1980 and received the Auxiliary's award as volunteer of the year in 1996. May held numerous positions on the boards of many clubs and organizations in Petaluma and was past president of Petaluma Garden Club, Petaluma Flower Gardeners, Petaluma and Novato Fuchsia Society, Petaluma Woman's Club, and AARP in 1980, 1991, and 1992. While president of AARP, she served on the boards of Petaluma Ecumenical Projects and Home Hospice. She was active at the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County, Petaluma People Services Center, FISH, Home Care Referral, Friends of the Petaluma Library and Petaluma History Museum.
The family thanks her wonderful caregivers that made it possible for her to remain in her own home and enjoying her garden.
