Mike was born in Yolyn, WV, but grew up and went to school in Norwood, MA. In 1943, he was drafted into the US Army 4th Infantry Division. He landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, and then participated in the liberation of Paris as well as the Battle of the Bulge. After being pinned down by German rifle fire in Belgium, Mike was interviewed for Stars and Stripes by Ernest Hemingway. On October 25, 1952, Mike married the love of his life, Alice, and together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage. They lived in the same house in East Walpole, MA from 1956 until May 2013, when they moved to Petaluma. For 30 years, Mike worked as a salesman of commercial kitchen equipment. He loved to watch the Red Sox and the Patriots, and was an avid golfer. In his younger years, he also played softball. Above all, Mike loved his wife and two boys. They fondly recall the many hours he spent pitching baseballs for them to hit. He was a wonderfully giving and self-sacrificing husband and father. David always called him "the best Dad ever," and Mark said he was "constantly challenged" by his father's example. Mike will be greatly missed.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran St., Petaluma, CA 94952. Family assisted by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Petaluma.
