MICHAEL MARTIN HANSEN was born in Chicago, Illinois. Michael came out to California at age 18 and stayed. Michael formed his own band and played with many musicians, including luminary Kate Wolf, opening up for such legends as Taj Mahal and Rosanne Cash. Michael earned his degree in art history at Sonoma State University while helping to raise his daughter and working full time. Wonderful father, beautiful husband, cherished brother and son, insightful co-owner of Old Chicago Pizza, songwriter and guitarist without parallel, and an old soul with a giant heart. Michael died suddenly on January 18th, and left behind an empty space that can never be filled. He was a person who loved with his whole heart, and who so many people depended upon. He loved bluegrass music, making and looking at art, people, and cooking for everybody. Michael knew something about everything, had an intelligence and wit second to none, and was so talented at anything he did. He could light up a room with his voice and spirit. What can we do without you, Michael?
Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Beverley. Michael is survived by his daughter Sarah Hansen; wife of 37 years, Joanne Hansen; father, Robert Hansen; brothers Timothy, Kevin, and Matthew Hansen; and sister, Robyn Hansen.
