Mike was born to Francesca and Jesus Mejia in Oakland, Ca. on September 6, 1931.
The family lived in El Mira, Ca. while he and his siblings attended El Mira Elementary school. Mike graduated from Vacaville High School in 1949 then and spent two years at American River J.C.
He enlisted in the US. Air Force in 1952-1956 at Fresno, Ca. and was ordered to be schooled at Sheppard AFB Texas and stationed at Hq. 4th Air Force, Hamilton AFB, Ca. He trained as a jet mechanic, served in the Korean Conflict, was again stationed at a base in the Dakotas. Finally, he was entered into the Reserves at Hensley Field, Grand Prairie, Texas at the 2596th Air Reserves Fly Center. From there, he was honorably separated from the AF in 1960. He was awarded these honors: NDSM, GCMDL
, UNSVM and KSM. He also earned Airman 1st class.
From there he went to Chico State College earning his BS in Phys. Ed with a minor in Mathematics. He spent several summers at Cal Poly Phys. Ed. clinics and started on his Masters Degree, finally receiving same in 1966.
He met his wife Karen (Gaye) Schindhelm in 1961 and married her in 1962.
He is survived by Karen of 58 years, son Steven (Heather,) David, and daughter Dawn Mejia Karlstad (Dan), of Rohnert Park, California, two granddaughters Jennifer Mejia Barragon (Fernando)(Steven) of Union City, Michelle Mejia (Steven,) and a granddaughter Deanna Karlstad, (Dan) and grandson Andrew Karlstad (Dan) all of Rohnert Park, California.
After many years of teaching in Half Moon Bay, Gustine, Chico, Susanville, Santa Rosa and Petaluma, coaching PE and math, he and Karen retired in Las Vegas, NV. for 18 years.
As his health declined, they decided to move back to Sonoma County, Rohnert Park again (where they had lived for over twenty-five years prior,) but elected to actually live in Suisun City, Solano County, near his sister, still quite near to immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his brother Manuel Mejia, sisters Mary Ellen Mejia and Connie Padilla (Trinidad.) He is also survived by two sisters, Lucy Bonnett of Fairfield and Socorro Godina of Sacramento, Ca. He also leaves two nieces and ten nephews, plus numerous great, great nieces and nephews. His interests were family, dancing, bowling, horse racing, and old westerns!
An interment is set for March 6, 2020 at the Sacramento Valley Veterans Memorial Cemetery at
5810 Midway Road in Dixon, Ca
