Newman Byron Nelson

Newman Byron Nelson, age 83, was born to the late Newman and Phyllis Nelson of Petaluma. He is survived by his sister Lois Field (Joe) and John Nelson (Judi) and preceded in death by his sister Janet Clary.

Byron passed away peacefully in his home in Penngrove with his children by his side. He is survived by his children: Lori Grossi (Dino), Byron Nelson (Edie), and Lynn Voss; his grandchildren: Mario Grossi (Shannon), Christine Nunes (Sergio), Byron Nelson, Jr., Zachary Nelson (Lindsey), Shelby Nelson (Jordan), Mallory Nelson and Kayla Dufour; and his great grandchildren: Niko, Lucca, and Ellie, Brooke and Kasey.

Byron grew up on a chicken ranch and worked alongside his father taking care of chickens and collecting eggs. He enjoyed the outdoors and going on family trips to their mining claim. He graduated from Petaluma High School in 1957.

Byron found his passion for building when he accepted a cleaning position at a construction site. From there he became a carpenter, obtained his contractor's license and went on to build many custom homes in the area. It was during the early days that he met his lifelong friend and work partner Nick Bursio.

In his later years Byron enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing poker with his buddies, gambling at the casinos, and hunting with friends and family at his cabin. Though it began as a hobby, he became a passionate collector of antique guns. Byron was also a dedicated member of the Penngrove Social Firemen.

A viewing is scheduled for December 16, 2022 at 10:00 am, followed by chapel services at 11:00 am, at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary in Petaluma, with a reception to follow at the Penngrove Women's Club on 385 Woodward Avenue. The cemetery burial will be private. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Byron's wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Petaluma or Penngrove Social Firemen.
