Patricia Kilgariff

June 19, 1941 — January 9, 2016

PATRICIA KILGARIFF nee Knight, a San Francisco native and longtime resident of Petaluma, died on January 9th after a 12-year battle with early onset Alzheimer's. She was a loving wife to Jim, devoted mother to Laura and Karen, proud grandmother of Nora Gonzales, loving aunt to 19 nieces and nephews and loyal friend to many. Pat graduated from St. Paul's High School in 1959 and Providence Nursing School of Oakland in 1962. That year, she began work at Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital. In 1966, she sailed as an RN for Matson Lines on the SS Mariposa, where she met her husband of 48 years, Jim Kilgariff. They married in 1968, started their family and moved to Petaluma in1972. Pat had a long and vital nursing career in the mental health field. In 1978, she became the head nurse at Hillcrest Psychiatric Hospital in Santa Rosa. An active member of her nurse's union, she was a tireless advocate for public mental health services. She finished her career as the advice nurse at Kaiser Petaluma and retired in 2000. She had many close friends, loved entertaining and spending long weekends in Dillon Beach and Bodega Bay. Her strength, humor and love will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, a tribute page has been set up in her name on the Alzheimer's Association website at www.alz.org.
