In true patriotic spirit of PATRICK SYNAN, passed away on Memorial Day at the San Francisco Veterans Medical Center.
Patrick was born on May 6, 1932 in Listowel, Co Kerry, Ireland to the late Patrick J. & Bridget Synan. Loving brother of the late William, Edward, James, Maureen, Margaret, Cornelius, Sean & Sheila Ryan. Father to John Synan, San Francisco and Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews in Ireland and England.
Patrick lived a fascinating life. He traveled at a young age to five Continents, fifteen countries and twenty states. He was a citizen of Australia for 2 years and a member of the Australian Army. He was deployed to fight in the Korean War. Patrick was injured with shrapnel in his left leg and sent for a four month recovery to Japan. Following the war and his time in Australia he decided to immigrate to the United States. He arrived in San Francisco in 1954, where he pursued the American dream. On December 3, 1954, he was drafted into the US Army. He was sent to Fort Ord for basic training and then to Fort Collins, CO. Patrick received an Honorable Discharge on November 30, 1956.
A proud American, he became a citizen May 17, 1956, always flying the American and Irish flags at his Sonoma County home and participating in many Veteran’s Day Parades.
He became a successful entrepreneur with many different businesses in the San Francisco area. He was also a Police Officer while living in the Sunset District.
His greatest accomplishment was building his own home in the Richmond District of San Francisco. After gaining experience and growing more self-sufficient, he built eleven homes in the San Francisco area. After selling them in 1977, he bought a modest craftsman style home in Sebastopol and moved there.
He leaves behind his beloved companion, Patricia DeBernardi with whom he met at “Little Switzerland”. They shared many special memories with hours of dancing, keeping up friendships of old friends and making new friends as well. Most recently dancing at the Sonoma Moose Lodge on Sundays and the socialization of everyone he enjoyed so much. They traveled to Ireland and cruised to Mexico. He also leaves behind his extended family, Darlene DeBernardi, Jerry, Renee & Christopher Ryan.
Patrick was a gentleman with a warm spirit that earned him respect by all. A quiet man, great listener and storyteller, he was always willing to share his wisdom. He will be greatly missed.
Patrick was a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #48, Autumn Leaves, Accordian Club of the Redwoods, and Santa Rosa Moose Lodge #458.
He requested no funeral services here. A mass will be held on July 3rd at 11 am at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Interment of his ashes will be in the family plot in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
