Richard Dean Thomsen passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on July 18,2025 at the age of 81 after a series of health challenges. He was born on February 7, 1944 in Omaha, Nebraska and is the son of the late John and Elsie Thomsen.
Rich spent his childhood growing up in San Francisco, was raised in the Excelsior neighborhood and attended Balboa High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps at 17 years of age and served his country for 4 years and 4 months, at which time he was honorably discharged as a Vietnam veteran. For his last year in the Marines, he was stationed at Treasure Island and met his wife Sue during that time – marrying two years later. He was employed briefly by Pacific Bell, and then became an officer and then sergeant in the California Highway Patrol (CHP), retiring after 30 plus years, which included post retirement CHP dispatch work. Rich was first dedicated to serving his country as a Marine, and then serving and protecting his community as a law enforcement officer.
He loved his family, and was committed to his children and his grandchildren – always making time to attend every game, event, and celebration. He enjoyed tending to his classic stock 1955 Chevy and traveling to various car shows regularly, which included Petaluma’s annual salute to American Graffiti. Rich loved to see and explore different parts of the world by way of cruises with friends and family. Historical sites were among his favorites – notably Omaha Beach (D-Day) in Normandy, France and other areas of military significance that he would spend many hours reading about. He was a member of The American Legion, the SIRS, and St. James Church, Petaluma.
Rich is survived by his loving wife Sue of 58 years, his children, Jennifer and Jim (Tina), and his grandchildren, Isabel, Kyle, Caroline, Julia and Luke. He also leaves behind his sister Kathy, his brother Will (Anisa), and brothers-in-law Bill, Dave (Koppy), and Dennis, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Rich was predeceased by his late brother Tom, sister Avis, and sister-in-law Patti.
Per Rich’s request, a private celebration of his life with his family and friends took place ahead of this announcement. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice or your favorite charity.
