Robert A. "Bob" Oertel

ROBERT A. OERTEL passed away on October 29, 2014 in Petaluma. Devoted husband of Shirley M. Oertel of Petaluma. Beloved father of Russell Oertel (Esther), Susan Reichel, and Julie Traverso (Tony). Adored grandfather of Robert Oertel, William Oertel, Joseph Reichel, and Jack Reichel. Loving cousin of Chris Elzi and Marian Heaton. Dear former father-in-law of Mark Reichel. Age: 85 years. Bob was born, reared and educated in Petaluma, graduating from Petaluma High School and attending Santa Rosa Junior College. On June 30, 1957, he married the love of his life, Shirley Hayden, at the newly organized United Church of Christ. Together, they raised three children and enjoyed over 57 years of marriage. From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, Bob worked for his aunt at a baby chick hatchery, known as the Mortensen Hatchery. Upon his decision to move on, he began working for the Sonoma County Regional Parks as a building manager. His work continued for 21 years until his retirement in 1992. Still not fully ready for retirement, Bob began his employment with the City of Petaluma as an event aide for the community center. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering around his house, riding around on his tractor, and, especially loved to read any paperback. Bob loved to tend chickens and sheep, but, above all else, he loved his family. He was a wonderful man; he'll be greatly missed. Friends and family are invited to attend the Memorial Service, Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2 pm at the United Church of Christ, 825 Middlefield Dr., Petaluma, CA 94952.
