Robert Freeman Hulbert

September 6, 1929 — June 10, 2016

Bob passed away peacefully on June 10, 2016 at the age of 86. Born September 6, 1929 in Vancouver, BC, Bob spent his childhood years growing up in Tacoma and Bellingham, WA. His father was a logger and high climber, and Bob spent time at logging locations in the Pacific Northwest, having fun with his older brother Gordon as they would play around the steam donkeys and get into trouble. He was immensely proud of his father and his logging. He and his brother Gordon loved racing pigeons, and one of their pigeons, Louie, won first place in a race from Spokane to Tacoma. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1947 and after that attended Western Washington University, playing on their golf team. He met the love of his life, Doris, on a blind date in Eureka, CA. They married in 1951; this year would've been their 65th wedding anniversary. They moved to Santa Rosa in 1962, and Bob worked as an Insurance Agent for State Farm Insurance for 27 years, retiring in 1996. He was a longtime member and past president of the Redwood Empire Kiwanis Club, a member of SIR Branch #17, a charter member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Santa Rosa, and a member of the Bennett Valley Seniors Golf Club. Bob was an exceptional golfer, and received his first hole-in-one at the age of 16. He would go on to have 4 additional hole-in-ones throughout his life, and enjoyed golfing with friends and family. He was quick to share his golf wisdom and was humble in his accomplishments. Bob and Doris loved to travel, went on many trips together all over the world and were members of a local RV group. Bob also loved to dance, and was an exuberant life force. He always knew someone in the room everywhere he went. He was meticulous in everything he did. He was an avid 49ers fan and enjoyed many years as a season ticket holder at Candlestick Park. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, George and Mabel Hulbert, his dear brother Gordon Hulbert, who was killed in WWII, and his beloved granddaughter, Caty (Steve) Stockham. Bob is survived by his wife, Doris L. Hulbert nee Maahs, son, Dan (Sherre) Hulbert, daughters Sue (Bud) Rathke, and Pam (Matt) Nilsen; grandchildren Ami (Shannon) Giusti, Rob Hulbert, Christy Rathke, Stacey (Justin) Walker, and Scott Nilsen. Bob loved his family and enjoyed it when the family, immediate and extended, would get together. He could always be found with a camera in his hand, reminding us all to smile for the camera. We will never know all of his stories. Dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Forever in our hearts. Private family entombment will be held at Santa Rosa Memorial Park, Hillcrest Mausoleum. LAFFERTY & SMITH COLONIAL CHAPEL (4321 Sonoma Highway, Santa Rosa, CA, 95409) will provide Visitation Hours in the Fireside Room on Friday, June 24, 2016 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Family and friends are invited to attend a "Celebration of Bob's Life" on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Mark Lutheran Church (4325 Mayette Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA, 95405).
