Robert Earle Parnell, 72, passed away at his Rohnert Park home in February. He was born July 17, 1947 to Herman and Bernice (Cooper) Parnell. Preceded in death by only five months by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Shirley (Furrow) Parnell. He is survived by his three children- Tony, Scott, and Tammy Parnell- and his two grandchildren, Wyatt and Colton Johnson, as well as his brother Wendell Parnell (Nell) and numerous other relatives in Alabama where he grew up.
Robert (Bob) spent his childhood in small town Alabama, enjoying nature and getting into mischief with his friends and older brother. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman and sentry dog handler. From his time in the Vietnam War, he received a National Defense Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Commendation Medal, and a Civil Action Medal. After meeting his wife, Shirley, he moved to California and began his long career as a Correctional Officer at San Quentin State Prison, from which he retired.
Bob had a good sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved his morning coffee with Shirley while listening to KGO NewsTalk radio. He liked to practice the guitar and go for drives while listening to country music favorites Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams Jr. Some of his hobbies included coin collecting, refurbishing discarded items, crafting small projects, and relaxing in front of classic TV with a cold can of Budweiser. He also had a love of dogs and enjoyed leisurely walks with his adopted Beagle mixes. He was a hard worker and devoted to raising his children and later spent much of his time caring for his ill wife. After Shirley’s death, Bob found comfort in visits from his children and grandchildren.
Private arrangements were made. In lieu of flowers family is requesting donations in Bob’s memory be made to the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter, 301 J Rogers Ln., Rohnert Park, CA 94928.
