Ruby S. Eatherton

September 25, 1919 — August 27, 2016

Born September 25, 1919 in the Sonoma Hills, our beloved mother RUBY SCOTT EATHERTON passed away in Roseville after a short illness August 27, 2016 at the age of 96. The children of Danish immigrant parents Elise and Kresten Scott, Ruby and her younger brother Elmer grew up learning the value of hard work on a chicken ranch on Bodega Avenue in Petaluma. Graduating from Petaluma High School, Ruby became the first in her family to attend college, earning a BA from UC Berkeley in 1948 in Social Work. During WWII, Ruby worked for the Air Force, after which she moved to San Francisco where she worked as a secretary for Sunset Magazine, J. Walter Thompson and Owens Illinois Glass Company. It was there that she became reacquainted and fell in love with Jack Eatherton. They married in 1952, and settled in Tamalpais Valley, having two children, Scott and Janet. She stoically lived independently in Tam Valley until the age of 92. Ruby was very committed to her friends and family and proud of the achievements of her children and her grandson. Ruby maintained many lifelong friendships from the early years of her life. She had a great love of the outdoors, spending time hiking on Mount Tam, gardening, bird watching, and doing flower arranging. Long conversations and correspondences were her art, she listened well and was interested in people of all types. Ruby embodied the best of her generation; friendly, kind, unassuming, tough and determined with a smile to the very end. Ruby is predeceased by her husband Jack and survived by her son, Scott, daughter Janet, son-in-law Lars Jakobsen and grandson Kaj.
