Shirley Ann Hartford Jewel

December 15, 1927 — February 22, 2018

Of Petaluma, 1927-2018, died February 22, 2018, aged 90, peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness.

Shirley Ann Hartford Jewel was born in Tumalo, Oregon, one of ten children. Despite a major hearing loss in childhood, she was the first Hartford to attend college and was a proud graduate of Lewis and Clark College. In 1966, she moved to Petaluma with her husband of 65 years, Raymond Jewel, and worked for several years as a medical technologist. She was a woman of strong opinions and great creativity; gifts inherited by her children and grandchildren.

She was an avid birder and reader who at various times drove cancer patients to their appointments, cared for rehabbed wildlife, and gave a home to a series of abandoned dogs. She loved her Chihuahuas and did not suffer fools gladly.

She is survived by her husband Raymond Jewel, MD, children Marguerite, Carolyn, Matthew, Mark, and Geoffrey and grandchildren Nathaniel Vern Jewel, Dylan Jewel, Lexie Jewel, and Hannah Bowling. She is preceded in death by beloved brother Vern, brothers Frank, Clifford, and Roy and sisters, Mona May, Molly, Mona Renee, Peggy, and Patsy. She will be always remembered and deeply missed.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the bird or wildlife organization of choice or to either of the following:
