Stanwood G. Brooks

Sgt. (US Army Ret.) Stanwood G. Brooks - Sgt. Stanwood G. Brooks passed away at his home in Brookings on Feb. 28, 2010. He was 81. Friends and family are invited to attend the Memorial Service, Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, 850 Keokuk St., Petaluma; a reception will immediately follow services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or the Brookings Food Bank, 539 Hemlock St., Brookings, OR 97415. Mr. Brooks was born April 26, 1928 in Portland, ME to Phillips and Doris (Annis) Brooks. He grew up there until entering the US Army at the end of WWII. Stanwood served in Germany and two tours in Korea then returned stateside and served in the motor pool at the Presidio in San Francisco transporting high ranking officers and dignitaries. Following retirement from the Army in 1966, Stanwood began work with US Civil Service as a household goods inspector assisting military personnel in relocation. Stanwood married Barbara Fowler on October 13, 1951 in San Francisco, CA. Following retirement from 20 years of civil service, he and Barbara became full time RVers serving as camp hosts for Grizzly Creek State Park, Jedediah Smith State Park and one year at Yellowstone. Stanwood enjoyed fishing, RVing and camping and being near the ocean. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW and American Legion Post #28 in Petaluma and the Elks Lodge #1934 in Brookings.
