Steven Rakitnichan, aka Rat, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on July 19, 2025, at the age of 76. Steve was born in Petaluma on February 6, 1949. He grew up on a chicken ranch and passed away on the same property. After graduating from Petaluma High School in 1967, he began working for Boutz TV. He served with the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1972. In 1974, he met the love of his life, Janice, and they married nine months later, in 1975. In 1976, he started his career working at San Quentin State Prison, where he worked until his retirement as a Sergeant in 2004. He enjoyed camping, riding his Harley, reading, telling jokes, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice, of 50 years, his children, Sheri (Jeff) Carter and Sean (Allison) Rakitnichan, his three favorite buddies, grandsons Alex and Jacob Carter, and Shane Rakitnichan. He also leaves behind his brother, Michael (Laura), numerous cherished nieces and nephews, and treasured life-long friend, Wayne Van Patten. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Jane Rakitnichan, sister Dianne Bacon, brother Jack Rakitnichan, and father-in-law Henry Tabash.
Steve's family extends heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Petaluma for their compassionate care, especially Suzi, Reyna, Margaret, and Gray. A celebration of Steve's life will be held on Saturday, September 20th, at 11 a.m. at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary & Crematory, 850 Keokuk Street, Petaluma, California. Per Steve's wishes, come in jeans and t-shirt. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of Petaluma or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
