Sylvia Clark Coolidge

Sylvia Clark Coolidge - COOLIDGE, Sylvia Clark-Born in Boston, Mass. December 28, 1907, Sylvia passed away peacefully six weeks before her 100th birthday in Petaluma, CA where she had lived with her family since 1997 after over 60 years in Providence, RI. Her parents were Grace (Dodge) Clark and Charles Frederic Clark of Fairhaven and New Bedford, MA. She graduated from Brookline High School in 1925 and from Radcliffe College in 1929, AB Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, in Classics and was awarded the Army Radcliffe honor Scholarship for best scholar. She sang with the Radcliffe and Harvard choral groups and Boston Symphony Orchestra. She studied violin with her father and was concertmaster of her high school orchestra. Her professional career consisted of seven years of classroom teaching Latin and Mathematics and by over sixty years of private tutoring. Her beloved son, Clark, daughter in law Susan, granddaughter Celia, Susanâ??s family and her highly treasured friends survive her. Burial will be in New Bedford, MA through Wilson Chapel. A service at Central Congregational Church is being planned for Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007. A local memorial is pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 296 Angell Street, Providence, RI 02906 or to American Red Cross, Sonoma Co. 5297 Aero Dr., Santa Rosa, CA 95403 In 1934 she married Arlan R. Coolidge, violinist and department chair/professor of music at Brown University in Providence, RI, who died in 1993. He graduated from Brown in 1924, Phi Beta Kappa, Julliard School of Music, NYC, and was a fellow at the Vienna Institute for Music. He did much for the music community in Providence and helped found the RI Symphony Orchestra. Sylvia joined her husband in his activities in the arts. They lived in the Music Mansion 12 years and enjoyed assisting in meetings, etc. and attending concerts.
