Warren Zschach died peacefully on June 6, 2018, at home surrounded by family in Petaluma, California. He was a resident of Petaluma for 45 years.
Warren is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helene Zschach; 4 sons- Ken Zschach, Andy Zschach, Tom Zschach, and Brett Zschach; 3 daughters-in-law – Jill Zschach, Lynn Armitt, and Krista Koch; 7 grandchildren – Raegan Zschach, Tyler Zschach, Jamie Zschach, Rachael Zschach, Adam Zschach, Craig Zschach and Casey Zschach; one great-grandson – Jax Stopnik; one soon to be grandson-in-law – Alex Stopnik; his sister Joan Ramsey, his sister-in-law Norma Nicholson and brother-in-law Burke Nicholson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Warren was born on April 16, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, and his family later moved to Seattle, Washington. After serving in the Navy from 1951 to 1954, during the Korean War, Warren attended Oakland Junior College, where he met the love of his life, Helene Zschach, in a Physiology class. As Warren often said, "Helene was the best thing that ever happened to me.” They married in 1958.
Once married, Warren began his career at Safeway, where he worked in several locations before retiring from the Petaluma store in 1995. During his career, he and Helene were blessed with four boys. Warren coached baseball and basketball, served as president of the Petaluma National Little League Board, and was scoutmaster to Pack 7.
As the boys became adults, Warren and Helene began traveling the world. They toured Germany, England, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Canada, and Alaska, but their favorite vacation spot was Papakea Resort in Maui, where they would spend weeks at a time. Warren, who served on the USS Osbourn, also was treasurer of the USS Osbourn Association in his retirement, and he and Helene traveled throughout the United States for his ship's reunions.
Warren will always be remembered for his sense of humor, cribbage playing, plaid shirts, grandfatherly advice, sense of adventure, and the fact that he never met a stranger.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 16 at noon, at Parent-Sorensen on 850 Keokuk Street, Petaluma. A reception will follow at Petaluma Community Center on 320 N McDowell Blvd, Petaluma.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Warren's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Petaluma Hospice.
