Dr. William Dean Magers - Passed away on November 5, 2011 in Tempe, Arizona. He was the son of the late Josephine and Pete Magers, and the brother of the late Ruth Terribilini, Gerald and Max Magers. He was the uncle of Ed and Casey Terribilini, Lora Lee Grutkowski and Geraldine Magers. He is also survived by many dear students, former students, friends and colleagues. Also survived by Sam and Jack, his companion dogs.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service, Monday, November 14, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of Santa Rosa Memorial Park, 1900 Franklin Ave., Santa Rosa, CA. Entombment will follow. A Memorial Service will be held, Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 2222 So. Price Road, Tempe, AZ 852 In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the William Magers Scholarship at the ASU Foundation. William was born in Kansas on February 13, 1934. The family moved to Sonoma County in the 1930â??s. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School and the University of California at Santa Barbara and received his Doctorate in Musical Arts with a major in viola from the University of Southern California. He was a Professor Emeritus of Viola at Arizona State University. Before joining the faculty at ASU, he taught at the University of Illinois, the University of Southern Illinois and at New College. He performed with the Santa Rosa Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, New College Quartet and the Walden String Quartet. He studied with Paul Rolland, John Garvey and Milton Thomas and others and lectured and performed worldwide for the Rolland International String Workshops and was a member of the string faculty at the Meadowmount School of Music for five years. He had been an active freelance violist in New York City and had performed with the solo winds of the New York Philharmonic. He also recorded and was the recipient of many musical awards especially related to the teaching of music. His students have consistently won awards in local, state and national competitions and many are performing and teaching throughout the United States.
