YUKINO TAKAOKA KAMEOKA passed away shortly before her 97th birthday from complications with cancer. She is predeceased by her husband Takeshi Kameoka of 72 years, and her eldest daughter, Martha. She is survived by her children: Mary Peebles (Patrick) of Roeland Park KS, George Kameoka (Kathie) of Petaluma, Kathleen Terusaki (Steven) of Albany CA, Jennie Kameoka-Yu (George) of Petaluma, and Carolyn Kameoka of Petaluma. She is also survived by six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one step great-grandson.
She was born in Watsonville, CA where she lived as a young child before her family returned to Japan. After leaving middle school, she lived in Manchuria with relatives until she returned to California as a picture bride to marry Takeshi Kameoka. They lived for two years on farmland overlooking Drakes Estero at what is now Point Reyes National Seashore, raising peas for the San Francisco produce market. With the outbreak of WWII, they were incarcerated at Amache Relocation Camp in Granada, Colorado with Takeshi's mother Ei and their baby Martha. They were delayed several months in an "assembly center" as the camp was hastily constructed. Handicrafts she created at the camp are on display at the Amache Museum in Granada. The family returned to California in 1945, now with two daughters and bought the 15-acre farm in Petaluma. It was here in her home of 73 years where she passed quietly on the 4th of July.
