James Lipman Obituary

James Ralph Lipman, 84, a longtime Sonoma County resident from Rio Nido, CA, sadly passed away on January 28, 2023.


Jim was born on November 20, 1938, in San Francisco and grew up in the Sunset district. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1957. He spent many years on the USS Aspro SS-309, where he specialized and maintained the submarine's electronic technology. He then worked for IBM as a computer engineer for over 35 years. After he retired from IBM, he worked as a freelance electrician on the Russian River for over 20 years. He was a master carpenter who enjoyed and took pride in his numerous projects, including building a beautiful custom home and a spectacular 27' Thunderbird sailboat. He enjoyed traveling, sailing, reading, and learning. He always stayed busy and loved fixing and working on things.


He was well-liked and was known for his kind heart and sweet, friendly demeanor. He will be deeply missed by all of his friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Mildred Lipman, stepmother Irene Lipman, previous wife, Margie Lipman (O'Connell) and his loving son David James Lipman.


He is survived by his loving children, Stephen Lipman of San Rafael (Lisa) and Serena Lipman-Holdren (Reno) of Forestville. He also leaves behind his greatest joys in life, granddaughters Kayla, Katie, Kali and Marina. He is also survived by his beloved sister Joyce Barnes of Arizona, whom he dearly cherished, along with many other beloved family members and his closest friend, Gary Matthews.


A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary in Sebastopol, CA. A reception will immediately follow at the Rio Nido Lodge in Rio Nido, CA. A private burial will be held at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Alzheimer's Association.
