We are sad to announce the passing of Patricia (Pat) Ann Handyside of Petaluma, CA on September 20, 2023, at the age of 82. Pat was born in Middletown, CT and raised in Kingston, NY by her beloved adopted grandparents, Nina and George Morehead. Though born into unfortunate circumstances, Pat faced life head on with a positive attitude, creating family wherever she went.
Pat was all about family. After marrying Ray Handyside, the love of her life, in 1961 they moved to Petaluma to raise their children. On Lombardi Avenue, Pat helped to create a second “family” of neighbors and friends that has lasted over 60 years. There was always a pot of coffee on the stove and a shoulder to lean on for friends and family in Patty’s house. Most dinners included extra plates set at the table. Pat reveled in being the “hostess with the mostest.” Her home overflowed with laughter, love, and delicious spaghetti.
Pat was very active with her “church family” at St. James Catholic Church. She was a long-time member of the Ladies Guild and taught CCD in the 1970s.
Pat held several jobs, where she considered work associates “family.” She worked in admitting at Hillcrest and Petaluma Valley Hospitals; as a medical assistant for several physicians in Petaluma. She ran her own small business, “Call Pat” providing temp services to local doctor’s offices. Pat retired as an insurance agent with Farmers Insurance.
Pat was a member of the Hospice of Petaluma family. She volunteered at Sack’s Thrift Store and was also a direct care volunteer.
After Ray’s death, Pat moved to Valley Orchard Independent Living in Petaluma and built yet another “family” among the residents. She cherished these new friends and relished her life at Valley Orchard.
Pat was a voracious reader – never found without a book shoved into her overstuffed purse. She loved travel of any kind, although she had a soft spot in her heart for Hawaii. Pat adored her grandchildren and was never happier than when spending time with them. What Pat loved most was helping other people. She was a natural born caretaker and filled her life and the lives of her families with love. She will be deeply missed by so many, and her memory will live in the hearts of all who loved her.
Pat is preceded in death by her mother, Betty Staie, brother Charles Staie II, granddaughter Caroline Ely, and cherished husband of 58 years, Raymond Handyside II. She is survived by her children Karen & James Ely, Raymond III & Britta Handyside, Linda & Robert Masson, Elaine & Robert Pelt; grandchildren Barbara (Mike)Karsnak, Jacob (Jessie) Ely, Valerie Masson, Jesse Masson, and CJ Pelt; numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
The Handysides would especially like to thank Hospice of Petaluma for taking such amazing care of our mama. So many familiar faces, many of whom also cared for our father Ray, helped to ease her journey. You truly filled her last days with peace.
